Playback sound is more clear on VAR speed

Beitrag von frpe12 »

Hi all,
I'm a newcomer on this forum, and I would like first to thank you all for all information you share here.

I'm restoring a TS1000 : everything runs well atter cleaning applying new grease and changing all tantal and elko capacités. Except some little things and features.

1- When playing back a tape recorded at 19cm/s, the sound is more clear using variable speed than using 19cm/s.
Is there a filter that is enabled when 19cm/s speed is selected and disabled when selecting variable speed ?

2- Autostop does not work when using preselection counter value activated by Vz switch. I also need to disable the tape break switch, else it returns to STOP after some seconds, even when a tape is present. This switch seems to work in the opposite way !

For all other features, everything is OK ; fast forward and rewind is working well with variable speed using R105.

Do not hesitate if you have some tips !
Many thanks.

It is completely normal for a 19cm recording to sound more treble-emphasised with Varispeed.
This is due to the fact that at 19cm equalisation is done at 50µs.
Varispeed, on the other hand, reproduce at 90µs throughout. The equalisation that applies at 9.53cm.
If you do the Varitest at 4.75cm, the reproduction becomes extremely dull.
For the switch-off problem, the contacts from the counter and the tape-break function should first be cleaned and adjusted. It is essential to ensure that the contacts do not bounce and cause unwanted switching.

Hi Mampfi,

many thanks for your feedback.
OK, clear for equalisation difference between the different speeds.

Concerning the autostop with tape break switch, it works now perfectly after contact cleaning and capacitors update on board M. But concerning the preselection counter, the autostop still does not work.
I see a small contact switch behind the tape counter, but I don't understand how it works. Could you please give me some explainations ?
Thank you.

The small contact behind the counter switches earth potential to the electronics on the circuit board M.
This happens when the set value and the displayed value of the counter match.
In this case, a transistor generates the stop command.

...hope this is useful

Hi Mamphi.

OK, understood.
I think that the issue is based on the switch activation.
I can see that the contact is permanent on the electrical switch. It seems that the machanical white plastic part does not move automatically but only manually.
I assume that it should be far from the switch by default and push the switch to produce the electrical impulsion on counters match.
Is that right ?
Thanks a lot.

Hi all,

Thanks for your answers concerning the playback.
About the preselection counter issue, I opened a new topic here :

Thanks.
